General Biography

Justice Keshavnarayana joins CAMP with extensive legal, judicial and ADR experience. He served as a Judge for nearly 22 years, including 7 years as Judge of the Karnataka High Court. Justice Keshavnarayana played an instrumental role in introducing mediation into our legal system, when he served as the First Director of the Bangalore Mediation Centre, one of the most successful court annexed mediation programs in the country.

 

While on the Bench, Judge Keshavnarayana was known for his humane approach to dispute resolution. Lawyers praise him for his patience and commitment to ensure a full hearing. Since his retirement as a Judge, he is sought after as an Arbitrator for his ability to combine collaborative dispute resolution effectively in his arbitrations. Justice Keshavanarayana is regularly appointed by the State Government for conducting enquiries of public interest.

 

He is comfortable in Kannada and English.

Justice Keshavnarayana is a trained and experienced Mediator. In 2006, he was selected as a Member of the Study Team to study Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), ADR Mechanisms and Mediation, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. It was after this training that he was appointed to set up the Bangalore Mediation Centre as its first Director

Since his retirement from the High Court of Karnataka, Justice Keshavnarayana has been serving as an Arbitrator and Mediator. He serves on the panel of the Karnataka Arbitration Centre.

General Biography

Laila Ollapally is the founder of Centre for Advanced Mediation Practice (CAMP), a pioneering private mediation initiative set up in 2015 that seeks to promote mediation as a form of alternate dispute resolution in India. She is the founding Co-ordinator of the Bangalore Mediation Centre (BMC) acclaimed as the most successful court – annexed mediation program in the country. She is a senior mediator and master trainer at the BMC. She has practiced as an advocate for over 3 decades in the Supreme Court of India and the High Court and Consumer Courts of Karnataka. Since 2014, she is a full time mediator, dedicated to mediation.

 

Ms. Ollapally is on the panel of Mediators of the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC). http://simc.com.sg/mediators/ . She is appointed on the SIMC User’s Council.

 

She is on the advisory board of FSRI (Foundation for Sustainable Rule of Law Initiatives).

 

Ms. Ollapally brings into her mediations, a spirit of empathy and personal connection with the parties and their lawyers. She explains that in her legal practice, her priority was to understand the conflict in the background of pain and frustration experienced by the litigants, identify their underlying aspirations and explore possibilities of resolution prior to fanning the flame of the adversarial response. She attributes this to be the primary reason for her path breaking success in majority of the cases handled by her in the courts.

 

 

ADR Experience

As Founding Coordinator of the BMC, she was responsible for setting up and overseeing the effective working of the Mediation Centre. Along with FSRI, she has audited mediation programs set up by the High Courts in the States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab and Haryana.

 

She is nominated to ‘The International Who’s Who Legal’ of Commercial Mediation and was awarded for her International Contribution to Mediation by the University of Connecticut FSRI, San Francisco, California (2013).

 

Ms. Ollapally has been a Mediator since 2007 and has mediated several hundred cases with a very high rate of settlement. She has been appointed by the Supreme Court and High Court to co-mediate several high profile and sensitive disputes with Supreme Court Judges.

Mr. M. R. Prasanna has had a long and distinguished career for nearly 28 years as In-House Counsel leading legal departments of different organizations like Alfa Laval and Brooke Bond India Limited (now part of Hindustan Unilever). He was the Chief Legal Officer of Larsen & Toubro Limited after which he served as the General Counsel of the Aditya Birla Group between 1998-2010.

Since relocating to Bangalore in 2010, Mr. Prasanna acts as an Independent Consultant for corporates, advising them on a variety of corporate transactions, mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Prasanna is strong proponent of collaborative dispute resolution and spends much time and effort to influence and train the corporate legal community to use dispute resolution processes that are business friendly, cost effective and efficient.

Mr. Prasanna has been an Independent Director on the Boards of various prestigious companies and has also served on the Advisory Board of a Company and a Leading Law Firm. Shantha Chellappa has been a legal professional for more than 35 years practicing in the field of civil, criminal, labour, service and company matters. She has regularly appeared in different civil and criminal Courts, The High Court of Karnataka, Family and Labour Courts, Central Administrative Tribunal, District Consumer Forums and State Consumer Redressal Commission for both trial and appellate cases. General Biography

Mr. Sriram Panchu is a Senior Advocate and Mediator. He is the President of Mediators India, a national association of Indian mediators. He serves on the Board of the National Legal Services Authority, India and the Board of the International Mediation Institute (IMI). He founded the Indian Centre for Mediation and Dispute Resolution in 2001 and set up India’s first court-annexed mediation centre in 2005, serving as the first Honorary Organising Secretary of the Madras High Court Mediation and Conciliation Centre. He became the Founder and Vice-President of Association of Indian Mediators in 2012. In 2013-14, he was part of the Advisory Panel on Mediation, Law Commission of India and has been instrumental in making mediation a part of India’s legal system.

The Supreme Court of India has referred to Mr. Panchu as a “distinguished mediator”, an “eminent trainer” and “one of the foremost mediators in the country”. He is a certified mediator on the panel of the Singapore International Mediation Centre. In addition to his mediation experience and legal practice, Mr. Panchu has also undertaken public interest litigations pertaining to consumer rights, good governance and curbing of corruption. He is a member of various prestigious legal associations and was previously the Editor of the Mediation Journal of International Bar Association and a member of the Advisory Panel of the Asian Journal of Mediation.

Mr. Panchu has mediated a large number of complex and high-value disputes across the range of commercial, corporate and contractual disputes in different parts of India and abroad. These include construction and property development, insolvency and winding-up, property disputes, family business conflict, intellectual property and information technology disputes. He has also mediated international commercial disputes. Several of these were referred to him by the Supreme Court of India and the State High Courts. He was appointed by India’s Supreme Court to mediate a long standing border dispute between two States, and another public dispute involving the Parsi community in Bombay. He has also mediated a high stake dispute resulting in one of the highest settlements in a court-annexed mediation in India.

He is at ease with the facilitative and evaluative styles of mediation. He also combines mediation and arbitration, and has developed innovative methods which are user-friendly, and ensure finality of result with the best possible solution. His second publication “Mediation: Practice & Law” (Butterworths, LexisNexis, 2011) is the standard manual in India. He has further contributed the Indian chapter in Getting the Deal Through, published in October 2012. A chapter on mediation in Halsbury’s Laws of India authored by him awaits publication.
